Spring approaches...
Several of these friendly faces re-appeared at the meeting tonight (07/03/2012) and gave valuable contributions into how we are going to manage the project. Everyone agreed that having lots of organised activities would be the way forward, with a calendar to log them on available too, so everyone who could attend would attend!
Some of these activities ranged from assisting with existing project, trips out, seed plant and produce swaps and everyones favourite, guerilla gardening!
With warmer weather on it's way (hopefully) there should be a lot of activity in the coming month, which will be reported here and in our next meeting on WEDNESDAY APRIL 4TH.
If there is any new information or ideas available in the meantime, please get in touch with Eileen or Zaria at CAN headquarters using the details above. They will then let me know what I'm meant to be doing...!

The preparation begins....
Despite the recent cold weather, one of our eager volunteers and I dug the trenches this weekend for the peas at Neston Youth and Community Centre. It was cold, hard work, although it filled me with confidence as it was the first job to prepare the new beds for planting. By the end of the month, weather permitting, the first of our plants should be going into the beds and begin their exciting task of feeding our community!
Next week Incredible Edible Neston will also be present at the Health and Well Being fair at NCYC, on Thursday 16th, from 10.30am untill 7pm. If you want to know more about what we do, how to get involved and what you can get out of it please come down and have a chat! There may very well be some freebies in there too!

New Year, New Projects!
After a surprisingly warm christmas period the weather has returned to its usual cold and damp English wintertime. Despite the fact that not much is happening at this time of year in regard to planting or harvesting, a few things have been put in place to ensure growing sucess in the coming year.
The first of these was a leafmold 'skip', to collect the troublesome leaves at NCYC and put them to good use. A bit of chickenwire, some posts and some elbow grease and Zaria and I had created a sustainable source of mulch and organic matter than can be used on the beds in the coming months.
The christmas period also provided me with lots of new toys and gadgets, from a wealth of seeds courtesy of my parents, an allotment diary and this fantastic paper pot maker. It is made from sustainable oak, and uses unwanted newspaper. The best bit is that the 'pot' can be planted directly into the soil and will eventually decay, providing extra organic matter and eleminating damage that could be caused to the plants when transferring them.
My windowledges are now full of sprouting herbs in these little pots, ready to be put outside when the warm weather approaches!

Doing the spadework....
Last week I went down to the NCYC (Neston Community and Youth Centre) to have a look at the two beds there, and to outline what was going to be happening with them. We have decided to focus on one bed for the time being and get it ready for planting next year, and to complete the groundwork on the second bed in spring.
The huge amount of leaves in the area will also be collected and put into leaf mould compost bins, a medium-term investmentto make the most of what's available, cut down on waste and reduce spending.
A quick fix to our current compost dilemma was to get a large amount of 'soil conditioner' and dig it into the primary bed, improving the condition of the soil with lots of organic matter made from recycled garden waste.
This arrived, much to Charlie's delight, in a huge skip, which was then tipped out on the NCYC front lawn.
Paul had already begun to loosen up the soil as it has a very dense, almost clay consistency, with lots of added stones, bricks and trumpets. After it had been broken up a bit, it was ready for the conditioner.
Several trips with a wheelbarrow were needed to get the compost down to the beds. Charlie helped us out by planting sticks, scaling the heap and putting soil into the wheelbarrow with his tiny yellow spade.
After barrowing the soil conditioner down and spreading it out, we then began to dig it in. I imagine it will take Paul and I a good few days digging to get the entire bed done, as it was very hard going, although the soil is much better aerated for it and should be great for growing next year.
I think it has to be said that Paul has done a great job of digging out the turf and clearing the ground, after only a morning of digging I'm feeling quite tired and I'm pretty sure I'll be sore tomorrow!
